The Skipstone Philosophy
The only way to teach someone to skip a stone is to show him how and allow him to attempt it again and again until the stone hops along the
water in perfect rhythm. He cannot learn to skip stones from just reading a book about it. You cannot just tell him how to do it. You have to show
him how and let him try. Sometimes it takes one try, sometimes two or three tries, then sometimes it takes hours of trying until finally...
the stone skips.
That’s the Skipstone Philosophy...Showing, Trying, Learning, Succeeding
Synergy
Synergy is a school-wide monthly
unit study that focuses on subject
matter that is interesting and
thought-provoking to the entire
student body. Each Synergy study
includes 20-24 hours of instruction
& hands-on learning, a challenging
project and a applicable field trip to
reinforce the subject matter.

Standardized Testing At Skipstone
Standardized testing is important at Skipstone Academy because it gives us a "real"
evaluation of our student body performance as well as a unique comparison of our
students on the national level. We administer the ITBS test each Spring to 1st-10th
graders. There are several tests that are approved by the Georgia Accrediting
Commission and we chose the ITBS because of its comprehensive reporting system
and our opinion of its adherence to the Georgia Performance Standards. Please
understand clearly that students at Skipstone are not retained because of their ITBS
scores and teachers are not dismissed because of student scores. Results from this
test give us great feedback as to the specific areas that individual children and entire
classes need to place more emphasis and develop further instruction. Through the
lengthy and involved accreditation process this year, we have been working through
statistics regarding our 2008-2009 ITBS standardized testing. Here are some of the
results.

Comprehensive scores of Math, Reading & Language for each grades are as follows:
First Grade scored at 2nd grade, 3rd month
Second Grade scored at 3rd grade, 2nd month
Third Grade scored at 4th grade, 1st month
Fourth Grade scored at 5th grade, 3rd month
Fifth Grade scored at 6th grade, 2nd month
Sixth Grade scored at 7th grade, 7th month
Seventh Grade scored at 7th grade, 8th month
Eighth Grade scored at 11th grade, 3rd month
Ninth Grade scored at 10th grade, 8th month
Tenth Grade scored at 12th grade, 3rd month

Interesting Statistics
*All of our classes scored at grade level but MOST of our classes scored above
grade level.
*Second year Skipstone Students scored an average of 2 grade levels above their
current grade level last year (with some scoring 3 and 4 grade levels above).
*All student scores were factored into the statistics above (including those on
Individualized Educational Programs).
*All of our classes scored in the highest half of the national average.
*Two of our classes scored in the highest third of the national average.

Conclusions
*We have some incredibly bright students and some amazing teachers at Skipstone
Academy who are "showing, trying, learning and succeeding"!
*Strengthening academics and adherence to the Georgia Performance Standards
are very important at Skipstone and are key to the success of our students.
